WEEK 1 — The Weekly “SuperAthlete” Roundup: Your Go-To Guide For Everything You May Have Missed This Week & More!

Welcome to SuperAthlete CEO Chase Jackson’s Weekly Roundup!

In this weekly post, Chase shares with you my most interesting discoveries of the week, including the latest news on the fronts of athletic performance, nutrition, health, coaching, biohacking, and longevity. Chase also recaps his upcoming events and special announcements so you can keep up with opportunities to learn, giveaways, discounts, and more. Let’s Get Better Today!

This week started by having NuFit Physio Garrett Tubman come to our house and put myself and Nikkiann through an assessment using a powerful electronic stimulation device called the NueBie. The concept behind the NeuFit method is that the brain and nervous system signal protective patterns to “lock down” the area of the body where an injury/surgery took place. This protective pattern creates stiffness by holding some muscles tight and creating weakness by turning some muscles off. Although the body is using this as a protective response initially, it can quickly become a problem because it slows down the overall healing process and creates movement dysfunction. The NeuFit device can quickly identify and reset these responses to re-educate the nervous system and promote lasting healing and better performance.

I have used electronic stimulation off and on for years (tens unit) to improve performance but this was at a completely different level. Garrett informed me that the NeuFit device runs through DC current compared to almost all other smaller EMS devices which run on AC current. DC current is much more effective because DC current is naturally produced in the body. If you want to learn more about this then I highly recommend that you check out The Body Electric by Robert Becker. I think this is a book that every bio-hacker should have on their bookshelf.

My goal with NeuFit was to try and strengthen my right knee which because of a football injury in high school has continued to feel weaker than my left despite my best efforts. This stimulation was INTENSE! After putting me through some range of motion exercises with the device Garrett was able to conclude that the weakness I was feeling in my right knee was being directed by a weak glute mead muscle. Garrett and I collaborated on a protocol to strengthen the glute mead which in turn is going to strengthen my right knee. I’m Excited about it! At FlyPhysio Garrett and his partner go through a 4 step process with the NeuFit method to help improve performance.

  1. They use the NEUBIE, to re-educate the muscles to perform at their highest possible levels.
  2. Apply strategic mobility drills to bulletproof your joints and improvement movement quality and capacity.
  3. Train you through large doses of eccentric movement to train the muscles to become more pliable and absorb greater amounts of force.
  4. Apply other unique exercises and techniques that will amplify your ability to perform at a high level – starting with your brain and then working your way down.

I highly recommend the NeuFit electronic muscle stimulation method and if you live in South Florida or are visiting at some point then I highly recommend that you work with FlyPhysio and Garrett. It was a great experience from start to finish.

THE WORLD’s MOST ANABOLIC ADAPTOGEN?

This week I have been experimenting with Rhaponticum also known as Siberian Maral Root. I have been experimenting with adaptogens for over a decade to see how they improve my energy, mood, and athletic performance. Some of my favorites that I use consistently include Rhodiola, Eleuthero Root, Schisandra, and Ashwagandha.

Up until recently I was unfamiliar with Siberian Maral Root powder. It was used by the Soviets in the 1970s when they were dominating the global sports scene. For those that know me you know that anything the Soviets were doing athletically in the 60’s and 70’s has me intrigued. Maral root powder has a great story in that the supposed reason humans started using it is that they would see elk fighting in the woods for dominance. The loser of the fight would immediately look for maral root to eat and the story goes that, that elk would come back stronger than ever.  Humans saw this and said “Hey if it makes the elk stronger it could make us stronger as well.”

It's hard to find any concrete data on the benefits of this adaptogen but those who do believe in this adaptogen say it can potentially provide these benefits: muscle strength, protein synthesis, and skeletal strength. I have been experimenting with using the root 3 times a day by boiling water, adding 3 to 5 teaspoons and then letting it steep for 3 to 5 minutes.

I will keep you updated and let you know how things go!

SPARTAN FOUNDER/CEO HOPS ON THE PODCAST

On Thursday we were honored to have Spartan founder/CEO Joe De Sena on the SuperAthlete Radio show. Joe has been an amazing friend/mentor to me and he absolutely crushed this interview. I am a big believer that obstacles make us stronger (which of course makes me a believer in Joe’s mission). I had to really showcase this philosophy yesterday as we had our audio engineer no show, and as we worked to set everything up we had Joe waiting 20 minutes to start the show. No bueno! But once we were able to get the audio set up we were immediately able to get into Flow, thanks in large part to Joe who was able to immediately start bringing the fire to motivate, inspire and provide tactical insights to us and our audience. Appreciate you Joe! If you have not yet listened to any of our SuperAthlete radio episodes then you can check those out here.

We are working diligently to get 10,000 downloads by the end of May so please download, listen and share with your friends. And if you have not yet signed up for an upcoming Spartan Race then make sure you go here to sign up for one!
